Memphis

memphis 027a

Memphis, located on the banks of the Mississippi River in the southwest corner of Tennessee, is considered the birthplace of blues music. Being on the Mississippi River made it an important trading center in the past. Today, it has a population of about 670,000 people, which makes it the largest city in Tennessee.

In addition to being the birthplace of the Blues, Memphis is also famous for Elvis’ Graceland and the Lorraine Motel, where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated. Most of the sights tourists will want to see are downtown or within close proximity. However, street parking is hard to find downtown. Unfortunately, the crime rate in Memphis is high, so it is recommended to travel in a group and not to walk alone, especially at night.

There are quite a few Elvis landmarks in Memphis. Obviously, Graceland (3734 Elvis Presley Blvd, $28+) is the first that comes to mind. Elvis bought this house and its 500 acre grounds for $100K at when he was 22. Then there is Sun Studio (706 Union Ave, $12) where Elvis recorded his songs. Many famous musicians of his day such as BB King and Johnny Cash also recorded here, as well as famous musicians today such as U@, Sheryl Crow, and Matchbox 20. During the day Sun Studio is a museum, but at night it turns into a recording studio again. Not as well known is Lauderdale Courts (252 N. Lauderdale, $10), where Elvis lived before he bought Graceland.

Memphis is also a key city in the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960’s and African American history. The National Civil Rights Museum (450 Mulberry St, $13) was once the Lorraine Motel. When it was first built, the Lorraine Motel catered to whites, as was typical at the time. However, during the segregation era, this was one of the few hotels that catered to African-Americans. Many visiting African-American celebrities stayed at this hotel because it was close to the Blues community on Beale St. On April 4, 1968 Dr. Martin Luther King was assassinated at the Lorraine Motel when he was in town to visit Memphis’ protesting sanitation workers. Today, we can see the history of the struggles and victories of the Civil Rights movement at this museum.

Finally, Beale Street is perhaps the most famous street in Memphis. It is the birthplace of Blues music and its restaurants and bars are abuzz with activity and live music. There are loads of tourists here and the street is blocked from thru traffic, making it a pedestrian only area. Curfew is at 3am.

Changpuhe Park

Changpuhe 11a

Changpuhe 1

This linear park is truly one of the hidden gems of Beijing. It is a beautiful garden with a wide array of colorful flowers and intricately constructed gazebos and bridges centered along the Chang Pu River (菖蒲河), otherwise known as the Wai Jin Shui River (外金水河). What’s even better is that despite being a stone’s throw away from the Forbidden City, this is a not a widely known tourist destination, which makes for a quiet retreat in this bustling city!

Changpuhe 7At the time I was there, this park was not mentioned in any of the tourist literature. I stumbled upon it one day when I was exploring the city on foot. There was not one tourist there, just locals taking in the beauty and serenity of this urban oasis.

During the Ming and Qing dynasties, this imperial garden was part of the emperor’s imperial city. The Ming emperors used to frequent this garden with his courtiers to watch games and competitions, but the Qing emperors did not frequent this park as much and it fell into disrepair as a result. During the 1960’s and 1970’s the river was covered up by concrete slabs and turned into a road. Hastily built housing and warehouses replaced the fine gardens. The area quickly turned into an eyesore. In 2002, they cleaned up the area to restore the river park to its former splendor and transform it into the breathtaking gardens it is today.

Changpuhe 20The entrance of the park is at Nanchizi Dajie (南池子大街) and the park spans a length of 510 meters ending up at Tiananmen Square. The Changpu River is part of the water system of the Forbidden City and was named for the Changpu or Irises that grew along the river. The Yu River (玉河) inside the Forbidden City flows to this river, which then flows east towards Wangfujing.

Independence Day Trip

This Independence Day we visited the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum and Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site. One has to do with America, and the other has to do with the independence of the Republic of Texas. The area around College Station and Washington-on-the-Brazos is hilly, with lots of ranches and not very densely popluated.

The George Bush Presidential Library and Museum in College Station, TX is located on the Texas A&M University campus. This museum talks about the life and contributions of America’s 41st president. Some of the highlights include the Presidential limo, replicas of President Bush’s Oval Office and office at Camp David, his 1947 Studebaker, and gifts from various heads of state. There is also an exhibit on space exploration and NASA. There were various astronaut suits, a larger than life astronaut made of legos, and a scale that showed your weight on earth and the other planets, among other highlights.

Our next stop was Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site located in Washington, TX. This is huge park with a couple museums on site and miles of walking trails. More importantly, it is where Texas signed their declaration of independence from Mexico on March 2, 1836 to establish the Republic of Texas. Ten years later in 1846, Texas became the 28th state to join the union.  The visitors’ center has exhibits that trace the history of the Texas Revolution and maps of the park. A replica of Independence Hall stands behind the visitors’ center and marks the place where the Texas Declaration of Independence was signed and the government of the Republic of Texas created. It is a simple wooden 1-room cabin with cloth coverings for windows. A long wooden table with barrels for legs stretches the length of the cabin with wooden chairs around the table and along the sides of the cabin. With this, you can see the simplicity and ruggedness of frontier life. This simple and rustic wooden cabin holds great importance in the history of Texas. It is the birthplace of Texas.

There are also two museums of note in the park. The Star of the Republic Museum details various aspects of the history of the Republic of Texas. The Barrington Living History Farm is a recreation of an 1850’s cotton farm centered around the Anson Jones Home. Anson Jones was the last president of the Republic of Texas before it became a state and his home is an original structure that was moved from his 1000+ acre farm to the park. We did not get to visit either because they were closed when we got there.

Star of the Republic

Washington-on-the-Brazos was the capital of Texas from 1842-1846. It flourished on the banks of the Brazos River with cotton as its main crop. There are walking trails that take you through the site of the old town. It was way too hot, so we did not wander on the trails too much. Today, Washington is a small town of about 265 people and you can really get lost on the winding one lane roads that meander their way through large ranches.
