Daytona Beach, FL has been a popular spring break destination since the 1960’s, but it is most well known for its auto racing. The beach is basically lined with hotels jostling for ocean view rooms, however, there are many public access points to the beach. There are tourist shops in this area and I am standing on the 3rd floor of the open air Ocean Shoppes. There is also an amphetheater, ocean view restaurants，cafes, and bars, and a boardwalk further down.
Although most racing today occurs at Daytona International Speedway, people used to hold auto races right on the beach in the sand in the early 1900’s.The speed record in the early 1900’s was 59 mph, whereas today the spped limit on the highways of 65-70 mph exceeds this. People still held auto races on the beach in the 1960’s. There was a restaurant on the beach with front row seats at these races. Today driving on the beach is permitted in some areas, but only at a slow 10 mph speed limit.
Spring is in bloom at Qianhai. Leaves have reappeared on the branches, and the flowering trees are starting to bloom. It is quite a transformation to witness, to see the lake come alive with greenery, having been in this area many times in the cold winter.
Qian Hai, or Lotus Lake, got its name from the lotus flowers that were in bloom in the lake. It is right across the street from the north gate of Beihai Park. It was a bustling commercial center at the turn of the century. In the spring and summer months, this area would be teeming with commercial activity. Today, it is well known for its restaurants that offer a variety of cuisines as well as lakeside dining. The views are spectacular during the day and even more so at night when the whole area is lit up by the warm glow coming from the restaurants. Popular options include sitting at the side of the lake or a window seat inside the restaurant with the ceiling-to-floor windows open for a fresh breeze. It is really busy in the evenings,a nd the experience is truly unique and amazing.
When you hear the name “Hawaii” you don’t usually think of rolling hills, wide pastures, and idyllic landscapes. Well, the interior of Big Island is just that. It is what Hawaiians call Paniolo country, or cowboy country. They raise cows on these green pastures, the homes are few and far between, and the city is small. This is Waimea on Big Island. Waimea is also home to Parker Ranch, one of the biggest cattle ranches in the US.
